Help catalog made using the wonderfull help resources done by Discrepancy

Description

This is a specific variation of what may be reported as a “black screen at start” issue. It does not result in Skyrim Crashing. The game will even load to the menu, but when clicking New Game, the screen will fade to black and then stay that way. In the background, you can hear the sounds of the Unbound room (like items being added to your inventory, etc) but the screen never fades in again.

Known Cause(s):

  • This is not 100% confirmed, but it is likely to be just an occasional glitch from the Skyrim Upscaler mod. This can happen with the unpaid version and possibly with the paid DLSS upscaler as well.

Troubleshooting

  • If there is a black screen with audio and no crash, simply close Skyrim and open it again. You may even have to do this a couple of times, as it might be black screen the next time too.
  • If the black screen persists and does not go away no matter how many times it’s restarted (try at least 3 times), disabling the Upscaler and switching to TAA may be the only option.

Disabling the Upscaler

Uncheck these 2 plugins (In mo2, left panel under 1.1 SKSE PLUGINS)

Then open MO2 and click on this

Set bUseTAA to 1 and click on Save

Description

The menu to assign skill points is not appearing after sleeping when a player expects to level up.

Known Cause(s):

  • The simplest cause is when you haven’t opened your skill tree menu first and selected Magicka, Stamina, or Health for all acquired levels.
  • Starting a new character or loading a save without completely exiting the game first can cause scripts to break and may mess with the sleep menu and static skill leveling.
  • Changing stances while in the middle of another animation (like mid-swing) can break your stances as well as cause other issues like with the sleep menu and static skill leveling.
  • The menu is triggered by the OnSleepStop() event, which only happens if the character was actually sleeping in the first place; so if you’re laying in bed and pressing T says “Wait” instead of “Rest,” the menu will not appear

Troubleshooting

  • Make sure Magicka, Health, and Stamina have been selected for all acquired levels.
  • Draw your weapon and try changing stances. If it doesn’t work, you may have to exit the game and load a previous save.
  • Lay in a bed and press T: if the sleep menu says Wait, then the player is not sleeping. It should say Rest.
  • Check the Go To Bed MCM and make sure “Sleep Modifier” is unmapped. If it has anything other than “???” there, unmap it. Only “Sleep” and “Serve Time” should be mapped, and they both should be T.

Description

The menu to assign skill points appears when it is supposed to, but even though it seems to let you assign them, the skill increases are not actually applied to the character. Those skills points simply become lost and are not restored on the next level up.

Known Cause(s):

  • SunHelm’s exhaustion status begins to apply an XP debuff the longer the player goes without sleep. When finally sleeping, if you don’t sleep long enough to eliminate the XP debuff, the level up menu will still appear but the points will not be assigned.
  • If the player cannot clear exhaustion no matter how long they sleep, it’s possible that they may have the “sleep modifier mapping” bug.
  • There have been reports of werewolves not being able to sleep and clear exhaustion, but this is still being investigated.
  • Making significant changes to the Static Skill Leveling (and Experience) settings in the MCM can result in this behavior as well (as mentioned in the pinned post on the Experience mod page).

Troubleshooting

  • Sleep long enough to clear exhaustion.
  • If exhaustion doesn’t clear no matter how long you sleep, check the Go To Bed MCM and make sure the “Sleep Modifier” is not mapped.
  • If Static Skill Leveling and Experience settings (skill amounts, caps, etc) have been modified, the recommended solution from the Experience mod page is to do the following before you level up:
    • Check your current level (e.g. 5)
    • Open the console
    • Type player.setlevel 6 (current level plus one)
    • Close the console, make a manual save
    • When the save is complete, open the console again
    • Type player.setlevel 5 (back to your actual level)
    • Close the console, make another manual save
    • Now try to level up

Description

Dodge no longer works even when locked on, weapons drawn, and pressing left shift

Known Cause(s):

  • This can happen when a controller is plugged in.
  • This can also happen if scripting breaks for whatever reason (such as a corrupted save, loading a save without exiting the game first, or changing stances mid-swing)

Troubleshooting

  • Unplug the controller. Or…
  • Exit Skyrim and reload a save from before dodge broke

Known Cause(s):

  • It happens if you installed new mods to the list and not ordered them correctly.

Troubleshooting

  • Make sure the mods (left side) you installed don't override the map mods (must be placed before the map mods), and the plugins (right side) are always in the order shown, and are at the very bottom of the load order with nothing else below them. Plugins from added mods must be placed before FNIS.ESP
