Ashes of War are a set of perks to unlock in the Stances perk tree that provide a powerfull chained attack for your selected weapon. The Ashes of War attack animation will be different for every weapon types.
Ashes of war attacks are very powerfull but will use 100 pts of stamina by attack.
To use the Ashes of War attacks, you need to do the following
Trying to activate the Ashes of War without the right perk unlocked for the weapon you want to use will not work and you will get a game message saying which perk to activate in the stances perk tree.
These are the ashes of war perks to unlock for every weapon types.
All Ashes of War perks can be unlocked at Stances level 80 (80 points in Stance skill level).
When you unlocked an Ashes of War perk for your weapon, the attack animations will be triggered when pressing the right button (see above). The animation will be different for every weapon types but also different for every stances you use.

In other words, let's take this example :
You have unlocked The Warrior's Ashes of War, you can now trigger the ashes of war attacks for Swords and Greatswords
If you are using the neutral stance, the default Ashes of War attack animation will be triggered.
But different Ashes of War attack animations will be played if you are using the High, Mid or Low stance as well to ensure a lot of variety in the attack animations
Ashes of War artefacts trigger a unique attack when the artefact is worn by the player (using the Ashes of War button mentionned above).
1. Unlock the Expert Smithing (advanced light) perk from the classic Smithing perk tree (requires 50 in Smithing)

2. Go to any forge, the Ashes of War menu should appear in the Jewelry category
3. 3 gold ingots are needed for each artefacts.
4. Having the right Ashes of War perk for the weapon the artefact you crafted is for
In the example above the Aimed Blow artefact works for several weapon types including swords, so in other words to have this ashes of war artefact working you need
The Warrior's Ashes of War perk from the stances perk tree (unlocks ashes of war for swords) if you are using a sword
OR
The Barbarian's Ashes of War perk from the stances perk tree (unlocks ashes of war for axes) if you are using a battle Axe
OR
The Blade's Ashes of War perk from the stances perk tree (unlocks ashes of war for katanas) if you are using a katana
Some artefacts work only for one weapon type, some other for all weapon types.
There are up to 74 different artefacts that can be used with different weapon types, some are offensive but some are defensive as well.
When equipped, the artefact overrides any current stance you are using, in other words when you will press the ashes of war attack button, the same attack animation will always be played.
